IFAR Announces Structural Changes as Part of Growth Plan

The International Forum for the Aftercare of Racehorses (IFAR) announced 16 October that as part of its plan for continued growth and longevity, it has formed a strategic partnership with the Thoroughbred Charities of America (TCA).

Under the new partnership, TCA will contribute its administrative capability and long-standing industry experience, while IFAR’s global remit will introduce an international dimension that amplifies the two organizations’ shared vision for effective Thoroughbred aftercare.

“We are proud of the work IFAR has achieved over the past decade, and we are excited for the organization’s future,” said IFAR Chair Dr Eliot Forbes.  “Working with TCA in this way will help streamline the administrative responsibilities that accompany growth and further strengthen our governance and reporting arrangements. TCA, with its proven track record of excellence, is well-equipped to support those functions and shares our passion for advancing Thoroughbred aftercare. We are also pleased to announce that TCA will have representation on the IFAR Steering Committee.”

TCA is a charitable organization whose objective is to raise money for distribution to non-profit organizations that work to support Thoroughbreds and assist the people who care for them. Over the past 35 years, TCA has distributed over $28 million to more than 200 Thoroughbred industry organizations. In 2008, TCA formally affiliated with the Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association (TOBA) and is now the charitable arm of the organization. “We are enthusiastic about being able to help support the mission of IFAR,” said TCA President Mike McMahon. “TCA is looking forward to working with IFAR by providing a clearing house for the paperwork that is a necessary aspect of technical administration. Aftercare requires collaboration, and TCA is happy to do its part to help expand to the good that IFAR does.”

IFAR is an independent, member-based organization that advocates for the lifetime welfare of Thoroughbred racehorses, strengthens global awareness of aftercare responsibilities within the racing industry, and promotes the versatility of the Thoroughbred across a range of post-racing careers. The Japan Racing Association (JRA) has entered into a multi-year sponsorship agreement supporting IFAR’s ongoing activities, demonstrating its strong commitment to Thoroughbred aftercare.
